The College of Pharmacy Organizes a Training Workshop on Biological Risk Management
The College of Pharmacy at the University of Kerbala organized a training workshop titled “Biological Risk Management”, targeting postgraduate (Master’s) students in the research phase.
The workshop was led by Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Fanoukh Abu Khudair, Assistant Lecturer Hussein Ali Qabil, and Assistant Lecturer Wael Latif Abdul Ali. It provided a detailed explanation of procedural methods for managing biological risks, such as disposing of bio-waste generated from experiments, various methods for its destruction, and sterilization techniques to eliminate contamination safely, whether through physical or chemical means, depending on the type of microorganism used in the laboratory.
During the workshop, it was emphasized that laboratory environments are among the most hazardous workplaces due to various risks, including exposure to chemical, biological, and radioactive materials, as well as physical hazards from equipment and tools used by researchers. Proper management of these risks is crucial to minimize their impact on health, safety, and the environment.
The workshop aimed to develop researchers’ skills in safety and security, raise awareness about avoiding workplace hazards, and familiarize postgraduate students with biological risks and strategies for identifying and managing them. The focus was particularly on implementing risk mitigation policies in research and medical laboratories.
This workshop is part of a series of sessions organized by the College of Pharmacy to promote a culture of safety and biological risk management. It also aims to enhance the skills of individuals working in the biological field, contributing to improved safety and security in the academic environment.
