A doctoral dissertation at the College of Islamic Sciences at the University of Kerbala, titled “Reading and Interpreting the Qur’anic Text According to Abdolkarim Soroush: A Study in Critique of Criticism,” was discussed by researcher Sahib Karim Sahib Aboud.

This study seeks to examine Abdolkarim Soroush’s intellectual project in his approach to reading the Qur’anic text, through an analysis of its internal structure and an evaluation of its epistemological logic. It also aims to uncover the inherent tensions within this project between the claim of relativity and the control of meaning, and between the historicity of understanding and the authority of the text.

The study affirms that the Holy Qur’an remains a fundamental axis for religious understanding, a fertile ground for independent reasoning and reflection, and an open horizon for contemplation and analysis. This necessitates critical scholarly approaches that enhance the intellectual dialogue surrounding the nature of the sacred text and the methods of understanding it in contemporary Islamic thought.
