Nahrain University’s Master’s Dissertation: On Designing

College of Information Engineering, Al-Nahrain University discussed a master dissertation on designing and implementing of an immediate assistive device for the blind using object recognition technology by the postgraduate student, Ms. Hawraa Kamel Abbas.

The dissertation reviewed designing and implementing of an assistive device for the blind that works in real time by designing a small, lightweight device that can be carried by the blind, it consists of a color camera, a Raspberry Pi 4 processing card, headphones and a simple power source to identify different objects.

The dissertation highlighted that the design works to determine the identity of nearby people and how to pronounce this information to the blind, and to equip the system with programs that enable it to recognize text signs and read their contents to alert the blind of their contents, as well as adding the feature of recognizing traffic light signals for pedestrians and pronouncing the status for the blind.
